What is Reiki?
Reiki is a method of healing that harnesses universal life energy to empower the body to heal from within. Reiki was developed in Japan by Mikao Usui. The word “Reiki” is translated from Japanese Kanji as, “Rei” meaning “universal, transcendental spirit, or boundless essence”, and “ki” meaning “life force energy”. This universal life energy is known by many different names, including “Chi”, “Prana”, and in many Western cultures, “soul”.
As a Reiki practitioner, I facilitate balance and healing from within by guiding the flow of this universal life energy. I operate as an “antenna” for this energy – the healing happens within you. Reiki practitioners are not the healers – my role as a Reiki Master is more of an observer who holds space for energy flow to enter and promote healing within the body-mind of the recipient. Reiki energy can only be used for good, and this energy flows to where it is most needed.
What happens during a Reiki session?
Reiki is a minimally invasive complimentary therapy. Sessions begin by a consultation where any issues that you wish to have addressed will be discussed. Then you will be assisted to the treatment table or chair, according to your preference, and begin a guided meditation to help you enter a relaxed state. Energy is directed by the Reiki practitioner either by sustained touch or by the practitioner’s hands being held directly over the area of your body being addressed. Reiki treatments have a very relaxing effect and often clients will fall asleep. This is perfectly normal. You are in a safe environment and Reiki energy will still be flowing as you sleep. It is also normal to experience varying emotions or physical sensations including feeling very warm or cool, laughing, or crying. Some recipients of Reiki feel relaxed without any other significant changes – this is also perfectly normal, and Reiki energy is still flowing.
Every “body” is different, unique, and divinely designed, so no person will react the exact same way during a Reiki session. Your experience will be uniquely yours and lead to a greater, more positive energy flow through your body-mind.
When receiving Reiki, it is important to be as open and relaxed as possible, with a mindset of receiving healing. It is helpful to avoid alcohol, meat, tobacco and processed foods for at least one week before and after your Reiki session. This helps your body to better receive and process the universal life energy.
I have been practicing as a registered nurse since 1996, and have practiced in the oncology and hospice fields since 2010. My work in oncology and hospice gave me my first exposure to Reiki and Healing Touch as complimentary therapies to aid in the treatment and care of my patients. In the following years I obtained OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse) and CHPN (Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse) certification.
In late 2016, I began losing much of the feeling in my hands and forearms and learned that I had developed spinal cord compression and required surgery. After my surgery, I found great benefit in Reiki therapy, and I was able to recover completely and regain full use of my hands. Since that time, I have been strongly led to learn Reiki so that I can use my hands to offer caring, comfort and healing to others, and obtained certification as a Usui Reiki Master/Teacher. I am also certified as a Crystal Reiki Master and have received extensive training in Color Therapy. I am currently working on certification for Animal Reiki and for Meditation Guide through the Natural Healer institute.
After completing my certification and working with family and friends, I made the decision to open a Reiki practice within my home. My husband and I have created a beautiful treatment room for my practice and we have been honored to welcome clients to our home for sessions!
